Getting a STEP (.stp) file into Revit

Getting a STEP (.stp) file into Revit

Revit to accept STEP (.stp) file into family creation to help fulfill the high demand of special equipments on the model.

Would be hande to have export to 'stp' file format (CIS2 format) included in basic Revit product. I'm aware of very good app: Advanced Steel Extension - it should be part of Revit.

This is a serious deficiency with Revit.  With each new revision, I keep hoping for this capability.  Our current workflow requires either bringing step files into Inventor or AutoCAD in order to get them into Revit and even doing that, if there is any complex geometry in the STEP file, Revit can't handle it.  For some equipment that we need to bring into our projects, we've had to resort to bringing the step file into Navisworks and then referencing the Navisworks file into Revit just to get the graphical representation into our models.  This has a serious impact on efficiency.

We (like many others) receive .step files from vendors of equipment. A vast majority of the time these models are fabrication quality, and very large in file size and complex geometry. We currently have a tedious cleanup process reducing the number of lines, vertices, voids, etc. to help with size and model functionality. Could the Autodesk Revit development team PLEASE give us something besides a time consuming work around to bring these models in to our files without ballooning our file size and seriously degrading the performance of Revit?  I would love to be able to "simplify" this geometry within Revit, instead of being left with a cumbersome blob.

@brendan_maxwell  - open the file in Navisworks Simulate or Manage, and publish an NWD file.  These can be referenced in multiple programs, including Revit.  Generally light enough for at least mocking up a no-go zone for day to day work.

We have Revit-only users who cannot cope with AutoCAD. So there should be a direct import ability.

Urgent!

STEP-Files (*.stp) is an international Standard file format for Files often created with CAE and Analysis and Simulation Software used by product designers and product engineers. Autodesk Fusion, Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD already support the STEP-Format why doesnt Revit? I tried to convert a STEP-file into a DWG using AutoCAD and Import it into REVIT, but REVIT still could not Load the DWG-File because of single unreadable elements.

Even when two-stepping through Autocad works, numerous iterations of trail and error are required.  I don't understand why year after year Revit does not have better import support.

When will Revit support exporting to (and importing from) Step?  (.step / .stp).

We often have custom flashings and brackets in our models and all suppliers use programs that work best with importing Step files.

Exporting DWG with ACIS solids and then using another program like Rhino or AutoCad Mechanical to make the Step files is far from ideal.

The same applies to importing Step files. This also has te be done with the help of AutoCad.

@wr.marshall , Thanks once again!

Importing a STEP file would be a critical component to add to the software. At minimum there should be a Import STEP function on the Import tab when working inside a family. That way Revit parameters and connectors, etc. can be added to the piece of equipment. Ideally the surface of the geometry would be able to "host" a connector element once converted as well, in lieu of creating another extrusion on the STEP file geometry as a workaround.

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones thanks to the team for the import functionality! How far is the export to .stp/.step functionality coming along?
