Fix text boxes so that you don't have to hit backspace when editing!

I just keep hoping this bug will get fixed, but with each release it persists.   Currently, if you have text on a view, when you click into it to edit, it more often than not, does nothing when you start to type.  It's sooooo irritating.  I don't remember what release started doing this, but it wasn't always like this.  Editing a text box is a very basic action that should work seamlessly.  I can't tell you how may times a day I start typing to find that I have to retype because of this glitch.  I know, you would think I would learn after a couple hundred times of doing this, but it still gets me a couple times a day.

Yep, this error came in version 2017 as part of an improvement.

Also waiting for them to fix this. Also they should add the text aligment tools when you are inside of editing a text.

Drives me bonkers every single time.

Yep, this is really irritating. Disappointing that what is essentially a bug-fix is still a user-requested 'feature' several versions on.

What is more irritating??? The text box before 2017 where it reformatted based on zoom level (took 9 years to fix this) or the new editor where you type in limbo?

I think it is the part where Revit doesn't know how to do text editing and needs to figure out a work around within their own software.

I find that when you click on a piece of text to edit it, if you leave your cursor over top the text element you can edit it just fine.  If you click it and move the cursor off the element, you can't edit it unless you move the cursor back over it.

Here we are, .... half a year later. Still no fix..........hopefully this bumps it up to their attention.

@chendersonis correct, if you want it to work, you have to keep the mouse over the text box your editing... too bad I developed a habit over the years of letting go of my mouse so that I can type with both hands.  Actually, I do have a habit of moving the cursor off of the text box so I can better see what I am typing, so I have a 100% failure at editing text in Revit unless I make a conscious effort not to move the mouse.

Yes why isn't this fixed, very annoying. Make this simple update before any other, text is something that is used more than any other command.

Can anyone provide a video or Revit file to reproduce the problem? I have tried several times but cannot reproduce the issue you have encountered. Thanks in advance!

This was an old bug and I have not experienced it recently while editing text.

I've been watching for it today and its happened about 5 times.

I installed a screen recorder (OBS) and a software to display keystrokes but I haven't managed to have the issue while recording.

Edit: I just saw Revit is on version 2021 and I'm still running Revit 2020.2.  Perhaps this was fixed in Revit 2021??? Hopefully someone else can confirm.

I've found a way to reliably reproduce the issue.

Reproducible by moving mouse to edge of screen/window after selecting text to edit.  Happens most reliably by swiping text to select and continuing to hold the mouse all the way to the edge of the screen.  It can also happen without selecting text and just placing the cursor and quickly moving mouse to screen edge, but this is much less consistent.

I'm not sure if other elements of the Revit/Windows UI can also cause the issue like the window/screen edge.

Revit still has Windows' focus throughout; tapping backspace gets Revit back to proper operation and allows entering text without moving or clicking the mouse.

Video link below.  Enjoy!

Thanks for recording it! Unfortunately I cannot reproduce it either at Revit 2020.2 and Revit 2021 by following the same steps. But I will still show the video to the developers and see if we could find some way to resolve it.

Trying out Revit 2022. Sorry to inform everyone, but it's still doing it. 4 years and counting.

Glad to see I am not the only person who hates this "improvement" with no useful purpose whatsoever. Fix this please

Here we are, 4-5 years since this issue started appearing in Revit, and it still persists. About half the time I click into a text box and start typing....nothing happens. I have to click out of the text box and click back in...sometimes this fixes it. For the lonely moderator that sometimes looks at these forums, here is what I have noticed.

  • This issue happens for existing text boxes. If I make a new one, I can type freely. If I modify an existing one, there is about a 40-50% chance that I type and nothing happens
  • This issue mostly happens when typing at the beginning of an existing text box. A small hack is I will position my cursor right behind the first character in the text box, and then I can start typing. I then have to delete the left over text I don't want.

Please, please, please try to fix this glitch. And while you are at it, allow for setting the orientation of the text outside and inside of the text editor.

Thank you

Yes I still have this problem in Revit 2022. I should be able to highlight text and then just start typing. Not highlight, then delete, then start typing. No text editor requires that.
