Electrical symbols don't work between elevations and the electrical plan

Electrical symbols don't work between elevations and the electrical plan

I'm working in 2015.  You may have solved this already.

When I put an electrical symbol on the plan, spaced so that a person can read them, on the elevations the boxes are spaced in a way that would never be done in real life.  If I make the elevations look right, the electrical plan symbols are on top of each other.  It is annoying.

We have an offset parameter and a left/right tick box which is linked in the family through to the detail item and offsets the symbol from its insert point. Since the detail item is an annotation the units for the offset are in paper rather than model scale so it works even if the electrical plan is shown at multiple scales (e.g. an enlarged plan of a kitchen).

I'm glad there is a fix but I'm not following what it is.

To break it down - please provide definitions

offset parameter is …

tick box is .. and can be found ….(full directions) I'm presuming this is
where I actually move the boxes together without cramming the symbols on
the electrical plan.

linked in the family means?

what is a detail item? Sounds like it is a special form of an object with
specific properties because it is a "detail item".

what is an annotation?

Thanks, Wendy

Taking a power outlet as a typical example, if you open it in the family
editor there will be some model elements that represent the physical form
of the outlet, these will probably have visibility settings so they don't
show up in plan views.

There will also be some detail items, either symbol lines in the 'Ref
Level' plan view or a detail family that is nested in the outlet family.
Our families use the nested detail family option and that family has a
parameter that we have called 'offset' that moves the symbol left or right
depending on the setting of another parameter which is a yes/no and
determines if the direction.

In short the solution isn't built into the standard out-of-the-box families
from AutoDesk, instead it is in the way we have built our families. We
built some of these ourselves and some we brought from RevitWorks - if you
want to see how it is done go to their website and download the (free)
sample file.

Sounds like I have to repopulate my electrical symbols from RivetWorks?

You can also turn your symbol into a tag... although most would not agree with this if you have many devices that need to be offset. If you only have a few then apply an instance visibility parameter to your anno in your electrical fixture family. Create the same symbol as an electrical fixture tag... then you can tag the fixture and move the symbol tag freely.
