Problem Description: When modeling insulation around pipes and ducts in Revit, users currently cannot predefine insulation thicknesses based on the type of insulation. Additionally, Revit does not automatically adjust insulation thickness according to the diameter of the pipe or duct. There is also no option to define an additional outer layer — such as a protective casing or finish — with its own material and thickness.
Suggested Improvement: Introduce a feature that allows users to:
Link insulation types to predefined thicknesses, based on the diameter of the pipe or duct.
Define an additional outer layer around the insulation, with customizable material properties and thickness.
For example:
< 50 mm | PIR | 20 mm | PVC | 2 mm |
50–100 mm | PIR | 30 mm | Aluminum | 3 mm |
> 100 mm | PIR | 40 mm | Aluminum | 4 mm |
Benefits:
Automatic selection of insulation and outer layer based on pipe/duct size
Reduced manual adjustments and modeling time
Improved coordination with EPB, HVAC, and construction specifications
Higher model accuracy and consistency
