Duct Fabrication

Duct Fabrication

Currently Revit models one continuous piece of duct until a transition or elbow interrupts the straight.

Revit really needs a function that divides the straight into user defined lengths, with flange info also.

Fabrication of Revit duct would need to go through a add in or separate software to accomplish many companies desired shop drawings. If Revit split the duct own its own, it would be ideal for so many people.

They have this feature once you convert it to the Fabrication items. It also has the option then to export out an MAJ file of your ductwork which then talks to the CAM software which talks to most shops for ductwork fabrication.

I'm not a mechanical engineer, but is what you are talking about achieved by inserting unions (in the duct fittings category)?  The union family that ships with Revit does not seem to have much in the way of flange information, but it does divide a straight run of duct into pieces, and a version with flanges doesn't seem too hard to build.

No not really. Once you convert the project into fabrication parts your fabrication database determines your duct cut lengths and will also use the correct fittings/pieces.

You can do as your saying as a work around but as of now I think Autodesks solution for what your trying to achieve is to go through the fabrication conversion. If you don't have a fabrication database your working with your going to have to get creative. We went through the process of what your suggesting years ago before the fabrication piece was created in Revit but now that the conversion is there we no longer worry about separating it in our models. That is left to our fabricators once coordination is complete.

I do think there are add-ins that you can get off of the Exchange apps that will help you in doing what you want at this time.

We are also very interested in such a duct-splitting feature. At this time only non-free add-ins are able to do that.

When converting the duct into fabrication parts the mep properties are missing.

We need that feature during all planning phases so the mep properties are very important to be available for every single piece of duct.

We are currently testing the add-in from http://www.cadstudio.cz/revittoolsen but we would like to have that as a feature of Revit itself.

Splitting the duct into straight segments should only be done by the sub-contractor that's going to be building the duct unless you plan on purchasing it from a fabricator.

Each fabricator has different equipment...4', 5' and/or 6' coil lines are fairly standard but the forming rolls of each can take up differing amounts of metal to form the joints meaning your true duct lengths can vary between fabricators.
