Detail Numbering Autoswap

Detail Numbering Autoswap

It is really frustrating when renumbering details on a sheet. Revit will not let you renumber easily. If I have several details on one sheet and I move them around but then I need to renumber them and I cannot because of "Detail Number is already in use. Enter a unique number." I have to temporary number others as X or Z.

Why cant Revit simply swap the detail numbers when I try to renumbering? If it want to make detail 1 be detail 8 why cant it just swap 1 and 8 instead of me having to temporary number one of them something else before I can?

I did a quick look and didn't see another post on this so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Problem: Many times when we reorganize view numbers, we get the "No Duplicate Sheet Numbers" Message, then, if you're like me, I go to that View and name it 111 instead of 1 and then this process has to repeat and repeat.

Suggestion: Please add the function to swap view numbers within the same sheet.

Thanks,

David

This happens to any numbering. It happens to me all the time when numbering rebars. It's kinda normal: prevention of double identity. No qubits in Revit! Just renumber the details to much higher numbers, then renumber them to the desired outcome.

Same idea could be applied to door/windows, grids, levels....

A 'Renumber Views' command would be great. I'm imagining a command that opens some kind of temporary view (like a sketch) and allows you to click the views in the order you want them to be numbered.

JO Tools will resolve this issue. It's a plugin which allows you to renumber any elements. I use it fairly frequently to renumber details on sheets.

The view ordering tool in pyRevit also does this...

I had a look at the pyRevit tool for renumbering views. It picks up the view numbers on a sheet from top right to bottom left, so very handy if re-numbering in that way. JO Tools you have start with the first view and click on the views in order to number them up from then - better if the desired order of the views is not from top right to bottom left. Both good free tools, pyRevit comes with a series of extra useful functions so would recommend to check out / download.

Just found the View Ordering Tool in pyRevit. Slighly smoother than JO Tools I must say. It comes as well as the Reorder Selected Viewports function.

If I have 6 viewports on a sheet, and I need to change the detail numbers, they should simply swap instead of blocking the attempt with an error. For example, I change detail number 6 to a 1, the 6 & 1 would swap places.

Make a native function for renumbering details/views/etc on sheets. The current renumbering process is BRUTAL.

For some reason I can't attach here... but there is a Dynamo script to re-number.

But yes, this should be a native tool! I bet 99.999% of users will re-arrange views after placing them originally. At least on one sheet in a project.

I think any renumbering strategy (exact topleft to bottomright /topright to bottom left, row/column binning, curve-proximity) that came native to Revit workflows would be welcome by users at this point, at least to get 60% of the way to a visually intuitive numbering system. Between view addition, removal, relocation, re-scaling, sheet size changes, etc... it's functionally guaranteed that renumbering will occur.

For now you can download pyRevit and use the View Ordering Tool under the Sheets drop-down menu. There's a bunch of other helpful tools in there too.

CTC has a great free renumbering tool that Autodesk should model their renumbering tool after.  Works great for renumbering almost anything!

Oh, could you post details for the tool? Thanks!

The suite actually costs, but you can get a free trial and after the trial period, the free tools remain active to use.
