Create a new family category for "Foodservice Equipment" that also cuts sections

Create a new family category for "Foodservice Equipment" that also cuts sections

Create a new Foodservice Equipment family category that also allows sections to be cut.

Currently we are using Specialty Equipment, but foodservice relies on cutting sections of our cabinets and counters and Specialty Equipment families cannot be cut to create sections like other categories such as Casework.

This is a major problem preventing foodservice designers from switching from CAD to Revit and causing consternation among existing foodservice Revit designers.

We are a major part of the design team on projects with commercial kitchens, we need our own category to differentiate ourselves from the rest of the consultants just like lighting consultants, furniture consultants and IT consultants.

AEC community, please join us, if something doesn't change we will be forced to use the Casework category so we can create cabinet sections but stainless should not be casework...this is being discussed in our industry Revit committees this year

Upvote for the Food Service category.

As far as Cuttable, that needs be be an option in ALL families and not hard-coded per Category.

I'm fine with it being a default per Category in the family template file, but it should be able to be changed for each family

I’ve been waiting for this to happen for a while now. With the industry shifting to Revit seeing this kind of change would be a wonderful breath of fresh air in the myriad of work around a that I’m used to seeing at this point .

I agree, it would be nice to have an option for cutting by family similar to Shared or Work-Plane Based.

This deserves a vote too

This needs to happen so very badly.  Along with being able to do sections, it also needs the ability to cut with voids similar to how sinks cut into countertops, and, have the same visibility properties as cabinets and/or windows for showing up outside of cut planes.  Also, personally, I would like for it to show up dark in the mechanical, electrical and plumbing view disciplines natively.  Others might not like it halftoned.  Some research would be needed.

or Let us create our own Family categories.

Specialty Equipment is also not one of the categories that can be Copy/Monitored.  Foodservice equipment changes affect electrical, mechanical and plumbing. These changes affect the Architect, the Engineer and other consultants.  Let Foodservice Equipment use the Copy/Monitor feature.

All of these issues are forcing consultants to work in silos.  Let's consultants share their Revit work with the MEP engineers.

Revit needs to define categories based on Uniformat and/or CSI. How about an Elevator Family? Always a mess.  More categories. Better defined rules.

Yes- add Food Service equipment, it would help so much during the design process!

Hi,

We are the Revit Product team and currently want to collect ideas of adding new family categories in Revit. We have seen your post + the votes and would like to kindly ask you to fill out and forward the survey for gaining more feedback on this topic.

The survey will take only about 5min. Here is the link:

https://autodeskfeedback.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9AhyuOXy7WEGX9H

It would help us a lot to get more understanding of which family categories are still missing in Revit, e.g. for industries like foodservice equipment design.

Many thanks!

Starry

HAPPY DAY!  But, the question is, what happens to the families we have for older versions of Revit?  As of right now, we have to keep our family versions in 2018 (We have projects in that version still).  We will still need to have our families as Specialty Equipment until our oldest project is in 2022.  Even though a new category is much welcomed and very much appreciated, it'll be several more years until we can fully utilize it.

Thank you so much @starry.cui and @kimberly_fuhrman-jones !!!!!  This change will go a long way to providing a better experience for all Revit foodservice designers and better coordination for all parties involved on commercial buildings that include a commercial kitchen. And it comes at the perfect time, the foodservice equipment industry is currently rebuilding our standards and we can now build them around this new family category.  I never did see an email about your survey that was posted above, sorry about not responding to that, but if you ever want feedback on Revit or on the foodservice equipment industry's use of Revit I would be happy to join a call and provide you with as much information as I can.  Thank you again for listening, we know we are a tiny industry compared to some of your other industries but our industry loves Revit and this change will only encourage more foodservice designers to switch to Revit.  Follow me on LinkedIn to see all the ecstatic responses to this news too 🙂

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones

Is there a list of all the new Object Styles in 2022?  I'm updating my view templates and have discovered two so far, wondering if there are others.

(Thanks for this one, it's a huge help)
