Cased Openings, Doors, etc. should have room bounding option

Cased Openings, Doors, etc. should have room bounding option

Cased Openings, which are often built as door families, should have the ability to chose whether or not they are room bounding.  Doors and wall opening families in general should give the option to not be room bounding.  While I'm aware that it's possible to schedule multiple rooms together as if they are one, being able to allow a room object to pass through an opening is ideal when both spaces are considered part of the same room.  The only work around that I'm aware of involves cutting the wall that hosts the opening and only making that segment non-room bounding, which is far from ideal.

I would like to see doors with the ability to be non-room bounding. This will help during the tagging of rooms which are contained in other rooms, for example a bathroom inside of a hotel room. It would help the accuracy of the square footage in the area calculation as well.

Meanwhile, did you try to group those rooms by "department" or a custom shared parameters?
That way, your scheduls of the hotel room could also be grouped together.

Working in a structural engineer firm I can attest that this would be a huge benefit.

A major project I'm currently involved in has run into a big issue because of this. The Architects use our model for their room bounds, but because we draw our openings with doors & windows, they have issues with the flexibility of their room bounds.

If our doors would be set to not be room bounding; the architect can choose to seperate their rooms more easily and we can keep using doors.

Most engineering firms use doors so that they can have opening types ( a type for each door ). That makes it easy for us to change doors in an intelligent (bim) way. Another benefit for us using doors is that revit dimensions can show us the opening widh & height when we put a dimension on it.  And last but not least, they are schedulable, which is always a plus.

We often get the remark from the architect to make our doors & windows out of "rectangular opening cuts" but for the reasons mentioned above, that would cost us a lot of flexibility and time.

There is no reason for arch and structure to argue about this among themselves. This should have been in revit for a long time.

The worst thing is, I googled this issue and it has been prevalent from as early as 2013. This is such a simple addition that could solve such a prominent issue. I'm amazed this only got 5 upvotes.

Windows should have room bounding options as well. Why is it so difficult to add a simple Parameter?

Hi, i think this could be great if doors could have the parametre to be room boundarie or not (just like walls).

This would help to calculate for exemple room with cupboard, Hotel room with bathroom, or the surface of a new room that would be two old room merged in one via an opening (that can't be done with wall opening because of phases).

Best regards

We have a project as described by gertjan, but we are the architects and i have been seaching this afternoon for a solution but as descibed by gertjan but there is NONE.

Well yes, really laborious ones or where I have to change the linked model, which is not ours, and we are not suppost to for obvious reasons.

And why is no one voting.. because, sorry to say this: if a revit issue has been there for ever, autodesk will probably not resolve this. And as most of us know that, we just give up, whitout voting (looks almost like politics 😉

But it would just be great if it could be done, so you have got my vote!

And please also add the option to the generic model family

Reinforcing my vote and supporting Wijnand's case and in hope, Autodesk adds a room bounding option to the generic REVIT windows family asap.

This is still a problem! I support the suggestion to add bounding/non-bounding properties option to both doors and windows (often used in interior partitions), as well as wall openings.

Also add this to dormer openings! the dormeropenings tends to block the Room/MEP Space from expanding

Totally agree, i'm in de same situation and nothing has changed....

Autodesk should really put this option in doors and window families.

How has this not gotten more support. I definitely want a room bounding parameter for doors.

Bump, this needs to be addressed.  If the fact that it's 2024 and people are still requesting this doesn't constitute "support of the community",  then I don't know what does.
