Automatic, on the fly, clash detection

Automatic, on the fly, clash detection

We are all working in the same virtual space at the same time so why no provide automatic, on the fly, clash detection as we work. There would be a menu with toggles to select or deselect items you don't want detected, for instance; toggle off detecting floors or walls but turn on doors, windows, beams, and columns. Pipe, ductwork, mechanical equipment, and cable tray or bus duct, would always be on. This would also work both ways in the model. If there is a duct or pipe in a wall and a door or window was added. The architecture group would be alerted to coordinate with MEP. Make the alerts as annoying as "Items will be disconnected" warning but also, where there is a clash, tell/show us where it is. Don't leave us guessing like "pipe has become disconnected" and make us guess or find out where it is. Also, have a 3d view that you can toggle "show clashes" and everything is gray except clashes. If it's a hard crash like a pipe through a duct, that clash turns red. If the tolerance of detection is 3" than anything under 3" would show as yellow. Allow BIM managers to lock the detection down to prevent the designers from turning it off.

I've used such dynamic systems in the past, and they have always presented more problems than solutions.

In most cases they slow the design process as they are constantly checking everything being placed, even when the designer knows it's clear.

Plus in many cases it's more expedient to do a rough design ignoring clashes, especially with minor objects, then gradually refine it, finally alerting others about places where lower priority items need to be moved instead.  In short, continuously muttering to the screen "Yes, I *know* it clashes, I'll get to it LATER."
