Allow grip handles in all family templates

I want a grip handle in the middle of a Detail Item line based family, apparently this is not possible. Why not allow some kind of method to allow creating grip handles within each kind of family template? Or at least document which kind of family templates do not support creating grip handles by design.

I'm a little confused? What would a grip handle in the middle of a line based family accomplish?

Line based families do support grip handles, they just have some rules on for setup.

For instance @Mike.FORM, controlling the length of the threaded part of a screw, or the length of embedment of a concrete anchor.

Ok, I understand now. I was interpreting the statement as, you wanted a grip handle at the midpoint of the family.

Good news is that you can accomplish a grip handle for thread length or anything else in a line based family as you can see in the image I posted of a line based family with 2 grips within the line based grip dots at the end.

You should post in the questions forum so people can help you.

Thanks @Mike.FORM, I was frustrated at the time and yes I could have stated the question better. I eventually got my grips, but it was not intuitive, and I don't remember how.

You said "Line based families do support grip handles, they just have some rules on for setup" what are these rules, or where can I find them?

Thanks again!

Line based families specifically need a second reference plane (set to not a reference) in the same location as the end points that is locked to the ones given in the family with a 0 dimension. Then your length parameter goes from that to your reference plane you want you grip on.

This makes it so that when you move the end point of the line based family the instance parameter controlling the grip does not change which makes it so the family doesn't break.

Thanks @Mike.FORM, that certainly is not intuitive - I'm saving it for future reference.

I went back and looked at how I eventually got mine to work, I had added an invisible line as a Weak Reference and ran a length instance parameter to it. That gave me a grip that formulas can respond to, that too was not intuitive.
