How can I change the default for wall height/depth mode?

Whenever I open a new project, wall setting is always on depth mode.

I tried to save a template after setting it as height mode, but the issue still remains.

I don't have this problem when I open ongoing project which is on my computer but as I often need to open a new project,

this is annoying me.

I would appreciate if you give me an advice.

Thank you in advance!

I believe that Structural Wall and Foundation Walls will default to Depth instead of Height.  Architectural Wall default to Height.  I am not sure there is a way to change that.

@nbower Thank you for your comment. Now I understand the reason why I got so confused about this default.

I used to use Revit Architecture and the default was height for both structural and architectural wall.

Then I sifted to Revit 2016/2017 which are onebox.  The default was set as depth for structural wall and height for architectural wall.

I also checked Revit Structure which has the same condition as Revit onebox type. So only architecture had the different setting and I was too used to use wall tool with the setting.

As far as I know the reason, I feel better. Of course, if I change the setting,it would be great. I might add it as a wish list then.Thank you again.

@nbower I found the solution for this issue thank. Once I drew a wall with height mode on my template, deleted the wall and save, the default was changed! I thought I tried this way but I might not do something wrong.

@nbower I am afraid to post many time but the issue isn't solved in the end. Last time I saw my template was updated with desirable default setting but as I closed Revit itself, the default returned to original. So I don't think there is a way to change the default.

In addition to setting the Unconnected Height, you can constrain the top of your walls to the desired level.

Surprisingly, when I changed the default height in both cases, saved and reopened my Projects, the default was saved.

Thank you for your comment, rsahayUZMK9.

However,  I wonder if the setting is still saved when you close the project and Revit itself, and then open the new project.

As my job I have to open my new template several time in a day. So it will be helpful that the default is saved.

@Sahay_R I created a plan view for building A that I want all the walls to run from Level 1 to Level 2. For building 2 I have a plan and want the walls to run from Level 1A to level 2A. Is there a way to set the wall height constraint to be view specific? If I draw in the view for building A, revit automatically know to draw the wall to level 2 instead of 2A? Selecting the level and changing the "Story Above" doesn't do anything.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Been racking my brain on this.

Good question. Are buildings 1and 2 in different files? In that case there shouldn’t be a problem - Revit remembers the top and bottom constraints of the last walls created. If they are in one file try this - create Scope Boxes around each building and associate levels to each. So you would have levels 1and 2 associated with Scope Box A, and the other set of levels associated with Scope Box B. That may be helpful.

Hi @Sahay_R, they are in the same model. I've created the scope boxes and associated the levels, it still doesn't work. What's the purpose of "Story Above"? It would be great if ideally you set it to level above and you draw the wall and the top constrain to it.

Any more ideas?

Hello @ysautodesklover

I understand this is quite an old post but wanted to share a link on this thread to a posted Revit Idea on this topic.

I urge you and anyone who would like to see improvements in this functionality to vote and comment on this idea.

Just added my vote! Would be nice to update this for the structural columns family as well!
