Getting a 'Failure Gathering References' error when loading a Revit 2020 model

I am getting a 'Failure Gathering References' error when opening a model with linked models. The linked model that is causing the problem has an AutoCAD civil drawing linked to it to show the site information. The CAD file does not get loaded.

Other AutoCAD links seem to be fine. The error pops up when the BIM 360 Autodesk Desktop Connector is trying to get the file. The 'transferring file' dialog will get stuck on the screen, it can't be closed, but it can be moved. It eventually goes away. Sometimes this results in an action viewable in the 'Pending Actions' window, but not always. When it does, it is listed as a worksync error. I have version 12.5.0.999 of the desktop connector installed.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions for a workaround?

@jbenwareNZ7VZ  welcome to the Autodesk forums!

Thank you for the question! I am finding a fair number of forum threads related to this error.

Also found this Desktop Connector help topic with the following info on the error:

When Desktop Connector is attempting to transfer files with references, it attempts to find all referenced files. This error indicates that the referenced files were unable to be found. The user should attempt to open the original file in the authoring application and attempt to resolve any missing references prior to transferring files with Desktop Connector.

If you have not already done so, I would suggest opening the Civil drawing file, and check if there are any unresolved references in the DWG which may be prompting this error.

@jbenwareNZ7VZ Have you been able to check the Civil drawing for missing XREFs?

Yes, our technical specialists have tried removing the xrefs in the civil drawings. The problem still exists.

Thank you for the update.

Going back to your original description, you said “The linked model that is causing the problem has an AutoCAD civil drawing linked to it to show the site information. The CAD file does not get loaded.

How are you seeing that the CAD file does not get loaded (for example, when you open the linked model directly is Revit not able to resolve the reference to the CAD file)?
