I find myself constantly fighting to get the view range settings just right to see the information I need. It's like tuning a guitar every time I need to find something.
Why not just make a CTRL + Scroll Wheel command to zoom the cut plane in and out? That allows instant and precise cut plane adjustment to find whatever it is we're looking for in the model. We can go back afterward and set it to a whole number with the fill-in-the-blank settings if necessary but for general working documents this would save TONS of time.
View ranges can be hard to truly understand. Sometimes it isn't the range but the elements that cause problems, too. I would suggest putting some time into trying to get a better understanding of them, via Youtube or other sources. They shouldn't be as difficult as you seem to find them. Tuning a guitar isn't hard once you know how.
