Worksharing Monitor for BIM 360

We just started using BIM 360. We have Workshare Monitor as an add in, but it isn't launching the Central File Access Pane. Would love help with this matter. Our team keeps syncing over each other.

Worksharing Monitor only works with central files on your own network.  Since BIM 360 is in the cloud it won't work.

There are a few Revit ideas asking for the functionality and for the communicator to return....but most have been archived as a "future consideration"

Are you using BIM 360 Design?  There really is no way to "Sync over someone" when using the Revit Cloud Worksharing service of BIM 360 Design.  With that being said, we are working towards a solution in the future to allow a worksharing monitor to work with BIM 360 Design.

Bird Tools has this:

I don't endorse or support the above tool but it does look promising.

Hi, Scott - could you elaborate on your response of "There really is no way to 'Sync over someone' when using the Revit Cloud Worksharing service of BIM 360 Design." Are you saying that when 2 different sources of metadata is pushed through the same pipe to sync to a single location (the Central file located in the cloud) that there's no way data corruption can occur?

This feature is needed more for BIM 360 projects than projects on our own network. At least I can just walk around our office and check who is on it, but what about monitoring people in another office, city or even country!!

Currently I just turn on the Worksharing Display Settings and select Owners or Checkout Status so I can see who is doing what. Comes in handy when I find someone is working a bit close to what I am accountable for.

 ,

Can you please provide details for your response? Would love to be able to explain how this works to others.

Also, besides @Anonymous  's great recommendation, it would still be great to see a list of people in model and sync status. Even if we cannot sync over the top of each other I prefer users can keep working until there is an opening instead of having their Data wait in line.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards.

Has anyone tried out the Bird Tools version of the communicator referenced in my previous response?

Another hidden gem in the “old” worksharing monitor was the synch history. I could see who’s syncing too often, not often enough and how long it’s taking them to synch.

Is there any other addins to monitor the work in progress ?

You should start a new thread and describe what you are looking for in detail.

This is crap! You pay monthly just to share a model and this is not included? You make a new platform that is supposed to be the Cadillac and it doesn't have tires? Really?  How do large groups of people in many locations work on the same large model? Autodesk this should be top priority!

Fair enough.
Helpful tip: If you're looking for the BIM360 Design worksharing monitor, stop. It doesn't exist! Better yet, Autodesk won't release the API so someone can create one.
Yes, 2020.1 gave us a cute little icon to let us know if the model is busy. And we can turn on the worksharing filter to see who owns what. So, if we already know all that, what's wrong with showing us a neat little list of who's actively in the model and who's synching?

Hi I find it also really sad. The communicator tool was a good way to see who was synching but also which comment was put in the synch dialog. This was really helpful because we would know what will be changed/updated before we synchronize. We always enforce users to fill in the comment field in the synch dialog to provide hints on what will be lost in case we have to recover a backup. But our user would be even more inclined to do it if it could also be visible and useful for their own daily work... that was the case with the communicator ! The only problem I had with the communicator was that it was in another App window and not a dockable (or even better, popup) Palette inside the Revit window UI. On a single screen environment (on laptop in the train or plane) this was really a waste of space.

We setup a MS Teams channel for users to post notes when they are syning and when they are done.

Not automated but helps with sync times when everyone follows the process of checking Teams when to sync.

this would work for users in other offices and counties  but you would need a Teams account.

IMHO I think the Work Share Monitor is a useless tool that distracts users into paying more attention to that than their actual production.

turn it off , disable it and rely more on live open communication with the project team.

and to all the other responder saying it doesn't work in the cloud BIM 360 please follow their lead they know what they are talking about.

education amongst the team will help in the Syncing over each other, in my experience users all wait until a certain point to sync. (break time , Lunch time, and time to leave)

may I suggest a more frequent scheduling of syncing, like after a large amount of work was completed.

If there is any information shared that is of value please give Kudos
If a solution is provided by any posters please mark them as Solved to benefit everyone else.
thank you

It is a very efficient tool. It doesn’t distract people from what they are doing. Are you working on teams in different offices when it’s not always convenient to call or message them? Are you working with other offices that aren’t part of your typical project structure? Firms sometimes partner. These are all true for us.
