Wood and Timber Framing

I have downloaded the Revit 2017 Extension that seems to cover Wood and Timber Framing but it does not seem to load.

For many years I have been trying to create structural Timber and Wood Framing in Revit that would work like the Structural Steel Framing does.

I use many workarounds (concrete beams and columns rendered with wood texture as an example) but I always have to have my framing design sent to an external software and hence errors. and more time waisted. to determine material lists.

Creating a Family of "Wooden" Beams, Columns etc. is a pain and I would prefer to work with a Revit Structural Families of Wood and Timber and Engineered Lumber.

Basically is there any Revit Extension that actually works out there?

Revit seems to be loosing the "working with real world objects" when it comes to working with Wood and Timber framing.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

Are you referring to the Subscription extensions?  If so they should show up on the Extensions tab, Modeling dropdown.

I did download and install that extension but it does not show up under load extensions. Just the steel does.

Building wood and structural wood/timber/engineered wood framing is a pain.

I am just going to using modified concrete columns and beam families.

At least with Revit 2017 I got it to load the proper US Imperial and Metric Families (still no real clear note by Autodesk that one HAS to choose the family types they want to use).

Thanks

Just following up on this post. Assuming you downloaded from here:

Then the extension should appear under Extensions and Modeling:

To be sure I follow here, you click on Extensions and you see Modeling but under that you do not see Frame Generator, Grid Generator, Rafter Framing, Rood Trusses or Wood Framing Walls?

If this is the case I would uninstall Revit Extensions for Autodesk Revit 2017 and try reinstalling it. If that fails I would temporarily disable all add-ins for Revit. Here's a link with instructions, however in your case there may be a conflict with another add-in. I would move all add-in but leave the folder and only install Revit Extensions for Autodesk Revit 2017 to see if everything under Modelling as I mentioned above appears.

If it does work then start adding back in the other add-ins (a few at a time) to see if you can spot the offending one. Keep in mind that you will have to restart Revit after you add in the extensions, then test, verify that all is well, add in a few more, restart again and continue testing.

I hope this helps and let me know your results.

Hello,

Is this extension for students as well? I am working on my Master's Thesis and I need the framing extension as well.

Thank you

They may have a free trial period. You can ask the developers directly.

I agree, it seems that house construction using wood framing is poorly supported in revit.... Hence our firm has not embraced revit since there is little incentive. Everyone still uses 2d for wood structural and when things don't work out on site the contractor usually just figures it out on their own. On large commercial and institutional projects, interferences and mistakes usually result in costly change orders and egg on the face of the structural engineer.

Hi alan.quinn,

I'm using R2017.2. Using "Extensions modelling wood framing walls" I have an error message I cannot file to the app producer. The message is quite extensive but not saying much to me.

I tried to change wall types and thickness with no luck

Anyone with the same issue?

Rafter framing and others work correctly

This is the message:

Have the same issue. Started removing add one one by one and reinstalled the REX to no avail on my main work computer.  I have access to a lap top that I am going to just make sure that I have all the updates installed and no add-one at all and try again.  Will keep you posted.  It is just sad that nobody from AUTODESK has not tried to respond to you since March.
