Add them in a floor plan view.

The symbol you are seeing is an indicator that Revit ain't finding a host --- which is odd if you are trying to place a door on a wall.  My guess is that the door isn't actually a "wall hosted" family. Perhaps, it's a faced-based famly instead? Anyways, check your option bar when placing and see if you have a host option to choose from. Betcha that you have two hosting options to select from: Work Plane and Face --- or some facsimile thereof.

-Go to a Floor Plan View--say Level 1. Then, go to Architecture Tab>Work Plane>Set>Specify a new Work Plane>

Name> Level 1. Then, go to Window>place window.

-If it does not work now, check the View Range of the Plan View--also check "default sill height" of the window family.

-Could be a cut plane issue. Try placing the window in a Ceiling Plan, or a 3D View. Any luck?

It is likely that @Anonymous placing windows and doors in a 3d top view instead of a true plan view. Either do it in a true plan view or a 3d isometric view.

-Check Phasing. , i.e. Existing, New Construction, etc.

-In the Plan View--Make sure the View's Phase is set to New Construction, set Phase Filter to Show All, Show Complete, or Show Previous and New. Try placing he Window.

-Also, check and see what Phase the walls are on.

-If your project has Worksets enabled, make sure you are placing the Window with the correct Workset set to current.

-Also, see if you have any Design Options set up--which can also cause odd things to happen.
