So I am currently working on an electrical model. I have never opened the architectural model, which is obviously linked. It turns out that I own an element in the architectural model. I have never opened the architectural model before. How could I possibly own an element?

Someone opened it during your lunch break maybe.

Thank you for your response ToanDN. The issue is that revit is saying that I (micphillips) own an element within the architectural model, which I've never opened. My colleague is in the same room as I and notified me that he could not edit his floor plan because I owned it, within his architectural model.  Also, when we go to lunch, we all lock out computers so it would not be possible that somebody used my computer to access the model. That being said, a local temp file would have been created for that file, which it has not.

How about you actually open it now, relinquish and close it. Can he edit the file then?
