Every piece of furniture I insert in from the Revit library I have to go into and turn plan visibility on for the materials to show up in plan view when realistic display is selected.

I don't recall having to do this before I reinstalled 2022 version of Revit.

Because materials only shows on 3d elements.  If you leave 3d off then you only see 2d presentation of the family (lines or regions).

Are you saying that you need to check "Plan/RCP" in the Visibility Settings of the Geometry in the Family?  If so, instead of you that, why don't you ORIENT a Project 3D View to the Floor Plan View and display Realistic in that 3D View.
