Hi, all. I just installed Revit LT 2017 a couple weeks ago and I'm really jazzed about what it can do! But there's one curious thing. Instead of the Big R application menu, I get a smaller version plus a File tab. I attached a screenshot to show what it looks like.
I don't think I'm missing any functionality because I get the application menu by clicking the File tab instead of the R. But it bugs me a little...
I'm running the latest Revit LT 2017 from my new subscription. I'm on a 2012 Macbook Pro Retina (probably key to the problem) and I'm using Windows 10 in Bootcamp. Granted, my NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M card is not supported by Autodesk but it seems to run Revit just fine otherwise.
Maybe someone much smarter than I might be able to 'splain?
Thanks for whatever help,
Bill

Are you sure it’s 2017? It looks like Revit 2018 to me and that’s how it supposed to look like.
Hi, Viveka.
So kind of you to help. I tried your suggestion but it didn't fix. In fact, I didn't realize I'm actually in Revit LT 2018 instead of 2017. My bad. Is that what 2018 is supposed to look like?
Thanks again,
Bill
OK, now I'm a little embarrassed. You are totally correct, PijPiwo. I am in 2018 and after looking it up, I see that this is what it's supposed to look like.
Humbly,
Bill
Hi @biztrobill
No problem! Happens to all of us. ![]()
Yes, @PijPiwo is right and it is designed to look like that in Revit 2018

Yes, who decided to change the old style of the "Big R"? It used to open the application menu. Now the Big R just opens a brief menu related to the window (minimize, restore, etc...). Now the application menu appears after clicking on "File" which is just like any other tab. The Big R has been demoted.
Does it really matter who decided to change it and why do you want to know?
It is questionable why would someone waste time to take away existing functionality.
I was also stumped why the R button didn't work anymore and assumed faulty installation.
I mean - what did this change achieve? Apart from making it harder to access file menu?

You think it was just one person, too?

What functionality are you missing?
I'm looking at a commonly used program right now that has the same arrangement.
The new button is so small that it is hard to click, only as wide as the word 'File'. Look at Inventor 2018 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK5lCJ-B2Do - they intentionally made it wider.
With so little changes introduced every year it seems that Revit team is quite small. It seems they didn't even have time to think this one through.
There is, indeed, a change of functionality. The Big R used to open the Application Menu, now it doesn't. It means that all the tutorials in videos, handouts, or books are now outdated. Every instruction saying something such as "To export to .dwg format, click on the "Big R", then click on "Export > CAD Formats...DWG", all this is no longer the same. What have we gained by having the Big R open a Windows menu for Minimize, Maximize, Restore instead of the Application Menu? Nothing. With so many things that need to be fixed and changed, it is annoying that time is wasted in changing something that was working fine but now it is changed for worse. That is the point of our recent comments in this thread.
All the functions are still there in the file menu.
One persons change for the worse is another's technological advancement.
How do you all know that this was just an arbitrary decision by some poor sod that doesn't know his apples from oranges?
Really? What is the technological advancement of this change?
That's not relevant here.
What is relevant is that there is no loss of function.
So you determine that my question to you is not relevant, so that you can stay off-topic, away from the point of the thread again, which is the change in the functionality of the Big R button.
I think that marks the end of the discussion for me. Have a nice day.
There is no loss of function. In fact, the same exact menu is available in just about in the same exact position.
If this is really about the big blue "R", it's a sad day on the forums.
Ok, turns out that update fixes the issue of tiny 'File' button. I've had a fresh install and the app didn't tell me to update until today.
So in Revit 2018.2 the menu is consistent with let say Inventor 2018.
Sorry, but you didn't illustrate your issue clearly. I didn't even realize that you were seeing something different than I was and thought you were just blowing smoke like this other guy,
