Walls: Setting materials

I am a new trial user of Revit and have found that when I've created basic walls, the materials and finishes properties are grayed-out and will now allow me to select materials.  Any advice on this would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Are you saying the Walls are gray or the Material Thumbnail Image is gray?  That Thumbnail color is coming from the Asset assigned to the Material.  Look on the Appearance Tab for those properties.   

To edit the Materials of Wall Layers, that is done through the Wall Type's Edit Assembly dialog box.
