Wall opening - which type to use to tag height and length

I have a project requiring to cut an opening into wall. i like to tag the opening with length and height to show on floor plan what size it is.

I didn't see a way to tag an system family opening (Architecture tab --> Wall opening).  Then I tried the loadable family, which seem to be generic models. The first benefit was, the loadable family maintains the room separation of the wall (the system family opening requires me to add a room separator line).

But the generic tag doesn't have length/height as default option for the parameter. I guess I could add shared parameters to the opening generic family and to the tag. But before I make a lot of effort I was wondering if there is amore readily available way to show on a floor plan what the opening size is supposed to be? I can dimension the length of the opening, but not the height. I also could just create a section view and put height dimension on. but it seems odd a simpler way is missing, or not visible to me.

Some threads suggest using door or window families for openings or creating dynamo scripts... but that all sounds too complex and may come with other downsides.

Use a door or window family with just  a cut opening in the family.  Width and Height are built-in parameters for doors and windows categories and they can be added to tag family without the need for shared parameters.

That works. But I would then need to have 2 tags. One for the length, one for the height. Ideally I get one tag that says "12'x 10'" or similar. Basically tag it like one would tag a door or window dimension.

Besides this tagging issue. What determines if one uses the system opening, or the generic family opening? Normally I try to avoid using generic families since they could be anything.

I'd put the Opening - and make it Parametric - in a Wall-Hosted Template such as a Door or Window RFT.   This way you can Schedule them as well.  That might be desirable.

@HVAC-Novice

I am not sure how adding 2 shared parameter is a big effort, but I am pretty much sure that a loadable family for openings could be at times more  convenient than the system opening.

Which category, generic model or an insert (ie: door or window) would depend on the category graphic  behavior you are after.

If you don't want to use loadable opening family, you can also use Curtain Wall with Empty System Panel to cut opening in walls, then use Curtain Panel tag and add Width and Height to the label.

Thanks for the responses. I first added shared parameters to the Generic opening family. But then I converted it to a window family and removed the shared parameters since windows already have the required parameters inc. sill height (in case I need openings at a height above the floor). I assume I want to find a parameter to filter those window opening from actual window schedules.

Main reason I went with windows was that I like to avoid generic families and tags since they could be anything and then I could end up with a plethora of parameters. If I  get visibility issues, I may change categories.

This project only has one opening and I don't think I need to schedule it. But a future more complex project may benefit from scheules.
