Wall Opening and Room Area

Is there someway to edit a Wall Opening, or Room area to act properly against a wall with a wall opening?

Context: The wall opening is 5' high, 3' offset from floor level. The wall it's cutting is a furring wall. So there is a wall from floor level up to 3' for the room area to read, it's just not finding it for some reason.

@KraiggC

It is always so hard to understand what u r trying to do...you could add a slightly zoomed out plan or an oriented 3D section where one can see what you are talking about!

what do you mean by "it's just not finding it" .. How did you tag that room? If the room can be found the area should be found!

  1. room area should behave perfectly ok is you have properly defined the room boundaries...
  2. check the room area & volume calculations too.
  3. If it is not reading the area, make sure you are using a tag which displays area..
  4. ....

im not gonna continue making assumptions and wild guesses : ) ...give more details or upload model.

Room was added before I inserted the wall opening, then it gave me the error: "Room is not in a properly enclosed region". So I ran a Room Separator to Re-Enclose the region for the room. I was just curious what if that's just the nature of wall openings and I'll have to always add in a Room Separator.

There's just something wonky going on with the situation I have I guess. I created a new project, tried to recreate the situation but it worked. So I don't know what's going on with this. Thanks though.

Ok...now it is more clear what you did

You need to set the opening as Room Bounding as well... Then you do not need a separator.

Same like doors and windows... They are openings too. If you uncheck their room bounding property the room will be not enclosed anymore So make sure the opening has that property checked.

if it's not the opening it can be an offset from the base level you are placing that room on...example the opening not touching the level, or wall has bottom offset, or a gap between wall and the opening not matching properly...in other words the room space is leaking

again assumptions...can't identify the exact wrong step you made without sufficient info or the model with the offending element

Now you have me confused. I don't have that option, I can't even "Edit Type" this opening.

That's the Out of the box wall opening tool...you can't edit it's type...and it needs a separator cuz they don't have the bounding property.

I personally never use those in projects...I use wall inserts...ie: a window or door family...there are in the default library a blank door and a blank window opening families. Those behave better and you can parametrize further and schedule properly (or phase once you get to that stage)

Advice...use those

Wall Openings can't be set as a Room boundary.

You have to add a Room separation line which is what you did.

Another alternative is using a door family with only the Opening Cut.  That way the Room is still one closed boundary.

If the bottom of the opening is 3' AFF, and the wall below 3' remains, I'm surprised the room didn't see the wall as a boundary. What is the value of the Computation Height parameter of the Level that these rooms are on?
