I have wall cutting family for an expansion joint that typically works when the height is set the same as the hosting wall, but not in this case.
I can extend the height ofthe family above the height of the wall and I can set the base of the family below the base of the wall, essentially placing its origin outside of the wall, without any problems. Same height as the wall and I have to delete or cancel.
The reason is that you have the gypsum board layer of the wall assembly unlocked.
If the expansion joint always cuts through the wall, why don'y you create the family from a door/window template so that you can create an Opening Cut? When done, you can change it to Generic Model category.

I accept that this appears to be the case, that it's the unlocked layer preventing the family from cutting the wall full height, but why? Is it a bug?
Note, I didn't create this family, and there was a reason someone had for it not cutting all the way through the wall like a door, perhaps for a movement joint in a wall where the join to the next wall was uneven, like around a column enclosure.
