Wall/floor/roof schedule

How does one create a wall schedule that includes descriptions of the building material by layer?  something that looks like this:

Are people creating materials for each layer and somehow copying pulling that information into another parameter in the wall type, or is everyone just writing out a list of building materials in a multiline text parameter?  Do people just make an excel list on the side?

I have been making wall schedules similar to the image above by creating a material for every conceivable layer we would need in a wall, using the custom materials as layers in the wall structure and using a plugin to pull the wall layer information into the description parameter of the wall type.  this obviously makes wall joints a bit of an issue.  For example, a material called "13mm GYPSUM WALL BOARD (TAPED AND FINISHED)" does not join with "13mm GYPSUM WALL BOARD" as one would expect if they were the same material.  besides the issue with wall joins this has mostly been working fine.  I like it because it ensures that wall layers are what they say they are in the schedule.

How are wall schedules typically done?

Yes, Material Takeoff.  You could get there through Parts Scheduling as well.

How do you ensure that your wall layers don't just show up in alphabetical order?  Don't you have to set up a schedule for each wall in the project?  Is there a way to show all of them in a single schedule?

use Sorting, Grouping and Filtering rules.

I see Wall Type Headers in your Screenshot, so to do the same, add Family Type to Sorting/Grouping and check Header. You can then hide the Family Type Column via the Formatting tab.

You are going to need this Calculated Parameter as well:

I see how it can be done by parts, is there a way to show the layer index on a material schedule?

I couldn't find any parameter to use and filter in order to show that, only sorting by description or material name, material mark...

You want the schedule to sort differently?  Add a number Parmeter and use this Parameter in sorting.  Then you can control sort order by entering numbers in the Parameter Field cells. Sorting can be Ascending or Descending.
