Void Issue - Cant cut Instance out of its Host

Dear All,

I am trying to cut the voids, but unfortunately, the error message comes: "Can not cut Instance of  "..." out of its host".

Any suggestions, ideas on how to solve and an explanation of why it is happening will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Regards,

Rasa

Hi @Anonymous, A generic model intersected by a concept mass should cut simply using the Cut Geometry tool (Modify Tab, Geometry Panel), see example below.  Maybe you have too many intersecting parts or try a different pick order

If you share the model I can take a look if you wish.

Hi @rasau00,

I had many issues with the voids during my first months working with Revit, and one workaround I discovered that it avoid errors is to always create a VOID geometry from the Extrusions command - solid extrusion.

So you need to create the shape with the extrusion command in a solid form.

After its completion you validate the sketch.

Then you select that solid extrusion and on its properties palette you have to change its Identity Data from SOLID to VOID.

Then you have to select that void extrusion, and activate the CUT geometry command. You select both geometries (the one who is cutting and the one who is being cutted), and there you go!

I hope that that helps!

Hello Greg,

Thanks for the reply. My issue is more complex... please see the project attached with families: Horizontal Fin should cut the Vertical fin.

Thanks.

Hi @Anonymous

Yes it certainly is more complicated - nice piece of modelling.

The option / work-around I have to offer is to make the corner cladding from a left and right profile, (as it probably would be made in real life - maybe), then we have parts that can be easily cut.

In this way each profile is only being cut twice, top & bottom, and a third cut is not used that interferes with the initial cuts.

I have attached my work-around for your reference. Hope this provides a solution you can work with.

@Anonymous

You are using a Workplane Based family and its host is the vertical profile. When you cut the vertical profile from both side => the host is gone

  • Either Adjust the void in the fins not to entirely cute the Vertical generic profile
  • OR Do not host it on the face of the Vertical Profile
  • OR Simply uncheck the Work Plane Based and host it on Levels (Then it will cut as shown below)

Hello @RDAOU,

I have tried your solution to uncheck "Work Plane Based", unfortunately, it is not working.

I attached the Revit project- the vertical fin has to be cut on both sides... same issue occures.

I have created the void in the flange but could not associate it with family table of flange which is created, hence error. Any solution of what error did I do.
