Visibility Graphics of Revit Linked Models and Sub-Links?

Hello!

A question was posed to me that I do not have the answer to, but have long wondered myself - so I am asking all of you for your help.

In the below image - the visibility graphics dialog box showing the revit links - the area boxed in red - sub-links? (not sure if that is what it is called)

I honestly have no idea what those are... can some one explain what they are? And is there a need to modify them - like when you want to turn off a category - do you need to do it for all of them or just the main link?

Thanks for your help!!

It is appreciated.

LD

The top most line is to denote the unique Revit linked file.  The subset of numbers below this represent the number of instances of the linked revit file within your host file.  In this screenshot, your 2016-11-12 is the Revit linked file.  Subset 13 thru 18 is the name of each Revit linked model copy.  This is set up this way so that you can control the visibility of all the Revit linked models as one or change each individual display representation for each copy of the Revit link file within the host file.

Awesome Dzan!

That is exactly what we needed.

Now I understand what those are...

Thanks again!

I have a bigger issue...

1. A user has turned off one of the "sub-links" and some of the hosted content disappears too. why?

2. How do I get rid of the "sub-links"

3. I thought that having the links over-laid vs attached stopped this from happening?

You didn't say which links were Overlay.  If the sub-links are attached to the main link, then when you link the main link in you project, doesn't matter as an Overlay or Attach, the sub-links will be brought in.

Open your main link and investigate.

I still do not understand why:

If a user turns off one of the "sub-links" the hosted content disappears.

why is this happening?

what can I do to fix it?

@dzanta Great info - I have learned something new.

Quick question - how do I know which sub-link is which instance? Can I rename the sublinks so that they are more specific?

each sub link is defaulted a name of "number"...i.e. 1, 2, 3, etc.  You can select each instance of a linked model in any view (i.e. floor plan) and go to Instance Properties...in there you will see the Name...change it to what you want...make sure it is unique.

The answer to your question about the hosted / face based families room names wires etc.

the user is not the person that modeled it but I need to get to the bottom of the so I can keep it from happening in the future.

Tks

David

- Face based families: shouldn't be deleted.  They can lose the host but they should stay there.  So this one is strange.

- Room names: can be deleted if he tag the Rooms from the linked.  You didn't say if the Rooms are in the model or in the link so this needs a clarification.

- Wires: strange too.
