I know there are already a slew of posts about purging viewport title families (and how frustrating it is!).
My question is stepped back - Is it normal for the baked in viewport title families to not show in the project browser? I have 4 viewport title families in my project browser, but 11 as options when I select a viewport title.
Because they are not in the project browser, I cannot find where they exist, which means I cannot figure out where they are being used (I hear they are used by legends and schedules in unpredictable ways). I just want to name them and organize them!

there are viewport title families and there are Viewport types, which use those familys. you may only have a 2 or 3 families, but depending on teh configuration there used, you may have 10 viewport types. if there not being used you should be able to purg them out using the Purge Unused command.

Ah - you are right - and I was getting them confused. I have 4 Viewport Type Families and 11 Viewport Types.
Let me rephrase - As you guessed, I want to purge Viewport Types. I also get/remember now that things like Viewport Types are not families and do not live in the project browser. And that the only way to remove family types is through purging.
However, these types do not show up in the purge list. Which I believe means one of two things:
1. The Type is being used somewhere.
2. The Type is baked in.
Is there anyway to find out if/where a type is being used, and if it is baked in? I heard that schedules and legends can have bakes in types (even though they don't use them) and they are impossible to edit.
Ha - I actually just got this same answer on another forum. Sad that you need to use a plug-in to make revit have a basic functionality, but at least there is an answer!
Got around to testing this - OMG it works! pyRevit saves the day (again).
Here is a more detailed breakdown for those looking for the same answer:
1. Install pyRevit
2. Far right tool WIPE - WIPE UNPURGABLE VIEWPORT TYPES
3. It will ask you which ones to wipe and what to replace it with
4. This does not delete them - it just makes them purgable - you now need to go into the Revit Purge Unused tool (under manage) Scroll all the way to the bottom - last option is Viewports - now you can delete!
