Using In-Place Mass Tools to Create Spiral Ramp - Orthogonal to Project Z-Axis?

Hello, I'm trying to construct a spiral ramp using mass tools— basically extruding a section profile along a series of arcs as shown in screenshot 1. I've semi-successfully generated the form, but it's skewed at the base of the ramp, as shown in screenshot 2...

For some reason I cannot select the profile at the base of the ramp, and rotate back into place. I was wondering if there is a way to keep the profile vertical, relative to the project? Maybe by tweaking the reference point properties (screenshot 3)? Any thoughts are appreciated! Hope this hasn't already been covered somewhere.

Thanks very much,

kyle

Why don't you just use Ramp in Project?

I’m trying to model this specific cross-section geometry, so opted for
massing tools instead. Ideally I’d be able to select a profile at each end
of the line and use both ends to generate the sweep, but for some reason I
get an error, “unable to create form” or similar message with that approach.

When I construct the ramp using splines instead of arcs, I can manipulate
the form after it’s generated— but not with arcs for some reason.

Well, I know exactly what you are going through and there is no easy solution. If the construct is a ramp, I would much rather struggle to make it work using the Revit Ramp tool rather than a Mass Form -- which in and of itself, has no BIM value in the end.

how I'd do it:

  • create several Levels or use Reference Planes as guiding planes
  • create in Level 1 a Sweep with a half circle path . Use a Driven by Host Point on this Path to place a Profile for the Sweep
  • select the End Face of the Sweep and Move it vertically till  Level 2
  • Use Mirror and Copy/Paste to Selected Level to place other segments of helix...

Thank you Constantin. I appreciate it!

...you could even build it as a Floor (shown below)or a Roof, as well as a Ramp (shown previously).

You can also add a few profiles on the work plane of the points along the path, then select all the profiles together with the path to create the ramp.
