Using Family Types parameters in Formulas

Is there a syntax for setting a family type using a formula? Or setting a parameter based on a family type? in other words what  I would like to do is:

"if(A condition, <FamilyType1>, if(B condition, <FamilyType2>, <FamilyType1>))"

I tried using brackets, quotes, parenthesis, carrots. I am like sure there is some syntax for this? Thanks in advance!

You can't. Directly that is. You can get there with a bunch more parameters, but it's kind of convoluted and not really "user-friendly". We did it years ago and abandoned it.   Why do you want to do it?  Maybe we can suggest a better way.

Exactly why you mentioned lol, to avoid using a bunch of other parameters. I wanted to do it for a few reasons. 1) to get around not being able to consistently lock geometry to nested families. So if I could set dimensions based on family types in formulas, then it would eliminate a user input.

2) to get a drop down menu in the family creator that would write to other parameters, which would have been really nice to use instead of checkboxes and a lot of limiting if paramters. I could use dummy family types, and then roll out sets of data and presets from that drop down.

thanks for the reply

Boy, that explanation is really hard to follow. Almost sounds like you want the nested family to drive the parent family's creation.  Kind of like building the parent family in reverse.
