Upgrading workshared file

Hi all,

I’m very new to Revit and am using Revit LT 2019. I was emailed a file to look at and when I try to open that file, it says it needs to be upgraded from 2017, but it’s a central file for a workshared project.

Can I upgrade the file I was sent and saved to my computer without upgrading the original the sender is using, which I do not have access to?

I’m trying to avoid accidentally upgrading the central file  and therefore causing anyone who’s actually using it to not be able to open and work on it.

You CAN, but be careful--you cannot SAVE DOWN from 2019 back to 2017, or any previous version.

This has always been the case with Revit.

If you are working with the party that sent you the file, and they are using 2017, and not 2019, then you should use 2017.--or ask them to upgrade to 2019.

Also, make sure you are using the exact same build of Revit on every PC.

Thank you for such a quick response!  Just so I can clarify for myself, because again I’m very new at Revit.  Even though it was emailed to me and I saved it on our server, which I do not share with the party who sent it, upgrading the file to 2019 could potentially upgrade their model as well?

And I could upgrade to 2019, look at the model, but not save it to avoid it completely upgrading?

No. Yours and theirs are two different files now. If you don't need to send the file back to the sender, you can save it as 2019 so that you won't have to go through the upgrading process when you open it again in the future.
