Well as title says. When i try to update our template to revit 2021 it crashes. Tried moving the template local so it wouldnt have network issues. Tried updating with Audit on also crashes.
This was the last step for us to continue working in Revit 2021.. the one i thought wouldnt be a problem but here we are ![]()
Anyone any suggestions?
Does your Template include 3rd party driven content -- content that is dependent on an Add-in that is not installed on 2021?

curious, what version were you upgrading from?
So we have been stuck in revit 2019 for a few years because of my inability to get our workflow working in the newer versions. Now i have found a solution. and now the easiest step istn working XD. So our template we work from is the 2019 variant with the most recent update 22-06-2020.
Until now i have tried the following(also tried these steps with audit on):
template 2019 to template 2021 ->crash
template 2019 to template 2020 to template 2021 ->crash
project 2019 to project 2021 ->crash
project 2019 to project 2020 to project 2021 ->crash
2019 to 2020 works fine
I did find a old version of the template from 2018 so its old and outdated and missing a lot of content. But that one worked going directly from 2018 tot Revit 2021.
I did find something on the autodesk help thing. it said some familys might be corrupted. but how am i supposed to find what familys are corrupted? there is no error report or anything
Not as far as i know. i only use stock revit things the only 3rd party stuff i use are exporters. Could it be that some familys are from a 3rd party library? because i have some of those mostly just symbols
it could be loaded families are from lower versions thats why it crashed? just saying. thanks
I am sure its one or even more families thats corrupted.. but how do i find which one? the template has about 3k items
You can export all of your families to a folder - as they export it stops if a family has an error. This may indicate the troublesome families. Right click on families in the browser and choose 'Save'.
There are also Batch Family upgraders available. It may work to export your families as suggested above, upgrade them, purge the originals and reimport them.
Also ask if you need so many familes in your template. I would advise having fewer, with an easy access library to bring relevant families into your project when required. Your template file must be rather big, which hinders performance.
Hey i tried to find the corrupted family.. well there are 6. deleted all 6 an did the export again. all exported fine. tried to update the file to 2021 and again " a serious error has occurred"
Perhaps you could try and purge all the families from the file, check that there are no warnings, save, close and reopen (with Audit) and then try and upgrade. Reload relevant families and save it as the new template.
Another way to check for bad families would be to Audit the file (may need to make a project to do the Audit), and then review the journal for lines like: ' 3:< [Family Name], LoadedId = [Element#], GUID = 6ec8b336-60db-4ece-84d9-f9ff6da57711, refers to a NON_EXISTENT_CONTENT_DOC. Please reload!

This could catch some that exporting families would miss (the families that wouldn’t export could potentially block the Audit operation, so you need to clear those first before you can Audit).

Thanks for the tip. i tried it but it didnt work. After that i tried to remove all familys that can be removed from the template. it still crashes when i try to update it.
Make a whole new template for rvt2021...?

FWIW: Did you try purging (*3..) down to the essentials, lineweight settings/company view templates etc...and clear all families that shouldn't really be in the template from the project browser, except annotation family/company standards probably... a lot of families I come across should be in an external family library file anyway, not in the template... edit: actually what @Anonymous said above...
True but that will be a massive time investment. and i dont think my boss is willing to take me off projects for a few weeks to actually make it.
And yes i tried. i even tried with all families purged. and it still crashes. the only thing that works is purging everything.

I have thrown this at Autodesk support. Even with all families and materials purged it crashes when updating. The only thing that seems to work is pre 2019 templates or a empty one.. So there is something broken in the 'core' of the template.
But rebuilding the template from scratch would cost about a month to do and in that time i wouldnt be able to do any projects. so yeah it would mean a month of wage and no production. Why it takes so long to do: we actually use BIM for our own benefit. daylight ventilation fireprotection and several other stuff we need for permits (which means we need it EVERY project) have been automated/semiautomated. That takes a lot of paramters a lot of filters and what not.
Post your 2019 template here. Perhaps we can identify what's causing the trouble.
I have added the version without all families and stuff but it still crashes. (apperently it doesnt allow for template uploads so i have to send it as project)

I opened your template using Revit 2020, with Audit checked and then saved it. It crashed when I tried to open it in 2021.
I then purged the file in 2020 and resaved. I could then open it using Revit 2021.
I unfortunately only have 2021 in trial mode at the moment, so I can't save it and repost it, but you could try the
same steps.
