HELP!!!!! Can someone please help me with converting my duplicate (with detailing) into an independent view. I have a very basic existing floorplan that I need to alter. I wanted to keep the original floorplan (level1) as the original copy and then create an independent copy that allows me to make changes without affecting the original. I know how to do this and I have done this before on multiple occasions. But for some reason the "CONVERT TO INDEPENDENT VIEW" is now greyed out and will not allow me to make this change. I am totally perplexed and cannot find a solution. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Penny
When you say "make changes without affecting the original"--what exactly are you wanting to change? If the changes are ONLY annotations and 2d
non-model elements, you can do it.
If you are wanting to change MODELED elements ( like walls, roofs, doors, etc.) they will cahneg in ALL views ( which is a good thing and intended.)
If you need to create 2 different "designs", where you are changing modeled elements, explore Design Options, Groups, and even separate Linked Revit models.
Duplicate with Detailing just copies over the annotations. Duplicate will not copy over annotations. Both methods will show the same Modeled elements.
Dependent Views are exactly that-- "dependent" on their "parent" view that they were created from.
If you used "Duplicate with Detailing" then it is already independent.
There is only one model. Views are just ways of looking at it. If you change a window in one view, any other view that sees that window will also show the change.
If you want to have two views that show a single window in two different places, then you need to learn about Revit's Design Options functionality.
Okay I just read your most recent post.
You need to learn about the Phases and Phase Filters functionality.
You can create the existing building in a view that is set to the Existing Phase. Then you make a new view and set it to the New Construction Phase and start modeling new stuff in it. In this way you will always retain the Existing stuff. Phase Filters allow you to have views that show some combination of both together.
I'm not sure I understand what you've been doing so far. Have you been copying your model over to the side and making changes to the copy, like you would have done in Autocad? Stop doing that.
Edit: You guys beat me to it! ![]()
Trying to undetstand your workflow.
You can use Phases. Put all Existing elements of the Existing Phase.
Make your "changes" using elements in New Construction Phase.
The Existing will be gray ( by default) and the New will be dark/black ( by default).
Use Design Options ( as previously mentioned ) if you need to have different "schemes" in the same model.
Thanks for the most professional feedback, I was struggling with the same thing and you've helped
Glad it helped!
Hi, I am having the same issue - when I duplicate the view & change the phase to new construction, it still isn't working. Whatever changes I make in the new construction also translate to the existing. They are not operating independently from each other. Not sure what I am doing wrong? Would love some advice please.
