Un-Join Floor and Wall in Revit

Hi I have a bunch of railings I've  created situated on the front back and side of my building and when i click on one of them they all highlight which is good when it comes to assigning materials I suppose - but I also have the front porch area and some wall extrusions with sweeps that also highlight when I select the railings,  so basically I'm looking to un-join them (I don't know how they ever got joined up in the first place -  so summing up I only wish to have the railings, fencing and the decorative Air terminal design on the top front section of my building highlight when selected nothing else.

I would appreciate any suggestions on how to free the porch section and wall extrusions from the railings

Thank you.

Kind regards

PS I have attached the Youtube tutorial and the part I'm stuck on is 33:13  47:49 in

What's a "Decorative Air Terminal"?

P.S. No video attached.  Would be helpful though.

Sounds like you have all those elements modeled in one In-Place Mass and grouped under the category "air terminals". There's a few guys in my office who model everything as "air terminals" because they're too lazy to select the proper category, and too lazy to make families work properly. If you're dead-set on only modifying the materials, you can open the mass and select each extrusion to change the material.

If you want to separate these elements, you're going to have to do some rebuilding by either modeling everything with real families, or by making a new in-place mass and tracing over the existing extrusions.

Pic related, I'm doing the same thing. I got some "air terminal" plywood wall covering that I'm going to rebuild as a wall sweep.
