Hi,
I'm Bram and i'm an intern at a small architecture firm.
They used to render / visualize all their projects with third party software (Artlantis, Photoshop, etc.).
They have asked me to explore the Realistic mode so they don't have to use the third party software while designing.
We use Revit LT 2021.
I started using images for materials. See print-screens below.
I was aware of the possibilities because we used it in school, and the firm liked the results, so we continued.
(I'm dutch if you're wondering in what language i'm describing the materials).
1. The first problem; duplicates.
First I created a new material and loaded the image (see print-screen above).
Then I editted the image IN Revit (sample size for example, see image below).
1a Now when I Duplicate this material, and I change the sample size, the original material ALSO changes size.
Now every time I want to try something new, I have to create a new material.
But this is a lot of work since they want to create a whole library with different types, sizes and tints.
And every time you have to fill in the Identity-, Graphics- and Appearance- properties again.
Is there any way to avoid this problem?
It seems that it only affects the properties of the image.
(I say this because we copy the materials without images all the time, without giving any problems.)
1b Also, when creating a new material, you don't get all the paramaters you might want.
For example; the old Glass has Glazing in the paramaters. While all the new Glass types don't have this parameter. So you can't give them any reflection/glazing.
When creating a new material there is no option to add Glazing to it's parameters. Is there a way to do this?
2. The second problem; location.
The architecture firm uses a shared network for all their data and projects.
When adding an image to a material we saved it on this network. (They store nothing locally on the computers.)
While working on this network, everybody was able to open the project with the correct visuals.
While working at home, using VPN, this didn't work. All the materials would become grey.
Now, because of Corona, we work at home a lot.
Our solution (for the time being) is this :
We created our own folder for the images.
We put this folder inside the official Revit location for Textures (see image below!).
This is on our local computers / drives. Revit created this folder. So it's not on the shared network.
In this folder we store our images.
Because Revit put this folder at the same place on all computers, it is easy to find.
If I now edit materials in a project (adding images to a material) I put the images in this local folder on my computer.
When I'm finished, I will copy the images/folder to our shared network.
Now my coworkers have to download the images/folder and save it at the exact same location on their computer.
Now they can open the project and see all the correct visuals.
We can now work at home and see all the materials / images, but this solution gives us new problems:
-If three people add new images to their folders, and you try to synchronize by replacing the folder, you end up missing the images of one coworker.
-Now we also have to do this when we are in the office, while at first this wasn't needed.
Thanks for reading all of this, hope you have some ideas/answers on how to approach this!

Lot of questions in one. I'll start by giving you the knowledge page on materials assets to read, which I think should cover 1b... Let me review the rest.
The network related material library question I don't really know. Maybe read some more on the sharing of materials here: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2020/EN...
Maybe check out this lecture on PBR materials: https://www.autodesk.com/autodesk-university/class/PBR-Materials-Revit-What-These-Materials-Mean-and...
There are a lot of issues you're asking about, but the one issue that I'll comment on is that when you duplicate a material, you must ALSO then duplicate the appearance asset. If you don't duplicate the asset, anytime you edit the properties on the asset panel, you're changing ANY material that utilizes that asset.
So, duplicate the material, go to the Appearance tab and duplicate that asset. Then you can customize away.
