Turn invisible host object in hosted family visible

In a hosted family file, someone has selected the host object and unchecked the "Graphics | Visible" parameter. How do you make an invisible host object in a family visible again? There is no family parameter associated with this object parameter and I am referring to the "Visible" parameter, not the "Visibility/Graphics Overrides" parameter. Also, this probably started as a face based family, so the host object is not a ceiling, floor, roof, or wall.

To recreate this - create a new family from "Generic Model face based.rft", select the host object, in the Properties dialog uncheck the "Graphics | Visible" parameter.

The host object in a host based family (wall, floor, ceiling, roof, face) cannot be visible once the family loaded in project.  It is the place-holder for the actual host in the project environment.

Not sure what your intent is but you can certainly model another object in the family at the same place of the host object and it can be visible in the project.

Thanks for the reply. We want to modify the family (.rfa) and need to see the host object "placeholder" again.

It is the host object in the family (not in a project) that we want to make visible again (in the family) so we can make changes to the family.

It is still in the family, but not visible, and as far as we can tell it is not selectable. If it is somehow selectable then we could simply check the "Visible" checkbox.

Did you try this? To recreate this - create a new family from "Generic Model face based.rft", select the host object, in the Properties dialog uncheck the "Graphics | Visible" parameter.

@sdurkee_sa

It is not possible to recreate the issue you are having...unchecking the Visible parameter in Family Editor neither hides the host in a face based family not does it make any other element invisible unless you have the Preview Visibility set to ON.

What you have there is most probably related to something else...upload the family for checking maybe then one might be able to help

If it is a face based family then I think the host solid has been 'deleted', not hidden.  That I can repeat.

I believe you cannot delete the host in a face based family!! which version is that??...

I think the issue the OP has is

  • either related to a plugin which hid the host via API which is very possible,
  • OR the family in question was upgraded from a very old Revit version (seen that happen too - missing hosts, wall layer without priority function, missing reference planes...)

most are fixable, but never tried a face based

For a generic face based family, you can change the extrusion height to 0
and the solid host will be deleted.
