Trying to use the Show Hidden Line tool on a linked file

I am trying to show hidden lines for a stair that is hidden behind a wall from a linked model. How can I select the wall while in the Show Hidden Line tool?

TAB and click until the wall is highlighted. Why do you need to select it?

I wish it was that simple. I can tab and click before the Show Hidden Line tool is selected, not after. Hence the cry for help.....

Show Hidden Lines by Element

Looks like it is not applicable for elements in linked model.

You could temporarily change the View to Wire Frame, use Linework tool to change the outline of the stair behind the wall to Hidden Line, then change the View back to Hidden visual style.

I realize this is an old question, but I had the same issue today (relatively new user here). This was a top return in my Google search, so maybe others will find this like I did. In the view with the linked model, within GRAPHICS properties choose "Show Hidden Lines." I use the COORDINATION discipline so I was able to select ALL hidden lines to show (this isn't available for all discipline view filters). Then my hidden linework behind shows up.
