So my team members and I were having a discussion about using a category that better fit what our product is and we noticed that when switching to a temporary structures category, we were no longer able to use our hole family and were wondering why.
I decided to do a save as and change only the Family Category. These are both face based models with nested components set against a concrete wall. Sometimes we have to cut through the face and wall. When switching to the Temporary Category, you will notice the hole is still there, but not cutting.

I then decided to go into the Family Parameters and match everything I could.
The hole family has had a few changes, we tried matching the category, playing around with the properties, and still no luck.
I am just wondering is this how the categories are designed or is it a bug? I understand that certain Family Categories are designed to fit the need of that type of product, but I could not find any information on how each one is different. At this point we are fine with using the Generic Model Category, but we are just wondering if there is more information about this?
I believe the new category act much like Mechanical or specialty category. I've test adding hole into mechanical equipment and no hole is created.
However what I find interesting is if you place in solid instead of void, you are able to cut with the model and create a hole.
This solid hole also works with temporary structure.
I am actively exploring this same issue. Please see the link below with the limitations of what model categories that Revit will let you cut in the model.

We sometimes need to model Temporary Construction Barriers. They may or may not be "walls" so we don't want to model them as walls in the Revit model. We want them to be a different model category (Temporary Structures). If we make a line based barrier family and a face based "DOOR" family, I cannot cut the Temporary Structures barrier with the TS "Door" family. I can cut a normal wall with the TS "Door" family or any of the above listed model categories.
I don't know why Revit would put a limit on what model categories can be cut. I created a different solution by imbedding the barrier and the "DOOR" in the same family so that the barrier would be cut. You essentially just stretch the barrier around the door.
If you have temporary structure, you cannot use generic model void. It has to be generic model solid. Once you place the generic model solid overlapping with the temporary structure, use the cut geometry. Once you cut, it will create a hole. Afterward you can hide the generic model solid and the hole will be there. See attached to see how I create hole.
Yea I know it is a workaround, but do voice your displeasure in this pinned topic
