I am not sure how to accomplish this.
need glass in this folding door family to be slightly transparent to show beyond.
like the 3D:
I just used that trick to get the opening to appear transparent when the door is set to show as open.. but what about the glass?

I haven't yet found a satisfactory solution to this issue. I'm not sure if it's possible unless done with a 3D view in elevation.

Did you read the instructions in that Link I provided?
Have you tried overriding the Window/Glazing graphics in View to apply a Transparency?
How about turning off the Glass Subcategory in the View (or whatever Subcategory, if any, the glazing geometry is in)? That's a legit, documented workaround. I think it was also mentioned in that Link.
Post your File.
If you want only the glass semi-transparent then using 3D elevation is the easiest way. If you want to do it in 2D elevations then use a shared nested family for glass components in the family, then create a filter to override the transparency of glass components based on the family name (or something unique).
