As the update 2024 arrived, I was excited - especially about toposolids. However,
The toposolid update has brought major usability issues. These feel like small things, but they have enormous impact on modeling aspects of Revit. Each of these is an inconviency, not a glitch or issue that prevents me from using the feature. How large the inconviency is, is up to who you're talking to, I guess. For me, these are game changing issues.
I have been proud of modeling my sites very accurately and well. This has been due to topographs' surprising flexible features.
First: You can't align toposolid points. Activating align-tool, inactivates toposolid edit-mode. This is a huge issue. I used to align dots according to ground walls and other built stuff, to shape the ground; so I aligned them both in X and Y, but also in Z. None of these is now available.
Second: 3D-camera used to focus on the topograph dot you picked, letting you rotate around it. This is not the case with toposolids. Usage of camera is disastrous. I often adjusted the camera small amounts to be better able to comprehend the shapes I am working on. Now this is ruined.
Third: Moving dots in 3D is useless. Why would I want to move them in Z axis in 3D view? I have absolutely no control over how the values change. Apparently it is relative to camera plane angle or something. In architecture, we need to adjust the height of the dot separately, and the position separately. In 3D, I definitely need to only change the X and Y, not Z. Even with MOVE-command, the dot is moved strange values in relation to camera angle, rather than the 500mm I just typed. I am now forced to have a floor plan open, and a 3D view open, and it is still very bad.
The good thing with toposolids is definitely the management of sub-areas. They can now be on top of each others and there are no longer issues with areas touching each others - which they were extremely sensitive about with topographs. Sadly, this is really the only very good improvement to throw around. Managing the dots with the shady wireframe-view is just more difficult than before.
I agree with this assessment on all counts. One other thing I would add is the inability to see the contours while editing the points (in 2d or 3d views) is a major loss and makes them almost unusable for designing a landscape surface efficiently. I also don't love the lack of an option to keep a consistent thickness, similar to how floors behave. If they could behave pretty much exactly like a floor but be able to show the contours (including while editing) they would be much better. Please improve this for the sake of us Landscape Architects who have embraced revit!
