Topo cut and Fill volumes 0 when splitting surface

Hi there,

I am working on an existing site site that is quite big, approx 55000m2(biggest site I have ever worked on), and have split my topo up into different pieces to delineate what is actually being worked on, and what is not, ie: showing carparks, existing grounds, and actually building works site. My issue is that when I do a graded region on the building works site, I have no cut and fill volumes. does anyone have any idea's on why this might be, and/or a way to actually make it work, apart from redrawing a lot of toposurface.

Cheers

1. Make sure your existing site is set to the Existing phase. If you've split it into smaller areas, check all of them.

2. When you select an area to do a graded region with, make sure you are in a view that is set to the New phase, or if you've changed up the phases, make sure it's the one following the Existing phase.

3. When you make a graded region, that existing topo should get copied into the New phase (or phase following Existing). Verify that it happens.

4. When you make a graded region, that existing topo should get demolished in the New phase (or phase following Existing). Verify that it happens.

5. The cut/fill values should populate in the properties of the new topo (the one that got created when you used the graded region tool. Make sure you're checking the right place.

6. Of course, since the graded region is a "copy" of the existing topo, there won't be any cut/fill until you edit it. If you accidentally edited the existing one, it isn't going to work. I like to take my New phase view and set the phase filter to Complete so that the existing/demolished stuff will dissapear and I can then only choose the correct bit.

I have done that before, but to be sure, I made a toposurface next to what I was working on and followed your workflow and that worked flawlessly.

However, my actual site does not do that.

I noticed that if I put my new graded region to the existing phase, then I get cut and fill quantites. (just messing around to see whats going on) I am quite confused as to why it would do that.

It must be because of the splitting up of my toposurface.

Any other thoughts.....

No other thoughts, unless your project has been set up with another phase prior to the Existing one and your baseline topo is on it.

No that was not it. There was the tiniest sliver of topo(1mm x 10m) on one side which I missed. I was sure I cut accurately, but obviously missed that tiny bit. I removed that sliver, and it all works. It is strange as it is exactly the same in the existing phase. My cut and fill now show a cut of 0.02, but I think I can live with that. Thanks for your help. I will mark your initial post as an answer as it was, I just missed that tiny sliver. Cheers.

Hello Chrisplyer,

I have read many posts on this subject and this one seems the clearist , so to the best of my knowledge I followed all the advise in your solve, but I do not get a cut and fill showing when I select the new topo surface (new graded).

I split the original whole topo in to two areas, one close to the building (as is) and the other area outside the building("surrounds"  both set to existing, I kept floors to guide my grading and removed original pads.  I graded the "as is" to give me "new graded", ensured "as is" was existing and "new graded" was new construction and made my adjustments to "new graded", when I pick "new graded" I only get the two areas, in any view. I have made  "as is" 65% transparent in view "3D existing..........." and view "site" for my own clarity, its something simple I am sure.

Am I correct in the interpretation of the posts that building pads will not give any cut and fills, or is there a way of combining graded regions and building pads to give cut and fill. You can probably tell I originally had pads under the floors.

Regards

Malcolm

This threads is certainly not solved.

Maybe in 2015 these suggestions might have worked, but in 2018.2 we are having the same problems.

Cut and fill values do not populate for certain topographies with Sub-regions and/or split into two surfaces.

See: https://youtu.be/c4UlS_CUlMs

Can this "Salved" mark be removed?

thank you

regards

Giovanni

Hi Giovanni Succi,

I've just discovered this issue for the first time, being this the fisrt time that I had to get this kind of calculations. I'm working with 2018.2 also.

In my case, I discovered yet another "fun" fact. I tried to split my new topography in 2 to try to pinpoint the location of the possible error. I fisrt thought that one of the limit point might have move by mistake. I could discover the aproximate location but could not find the odd points because they were all in the right place... At some point I could split the new topography in 2 pieces in a way that they both calculate, and not just one. That's really odd because that's just the confirmation that everything is in the right position. Hopefully I tried to merge the 2 pieces back, but again the merged one don't calculate.

This is really a stupid bug. Revit should adress this, starting with a better way to manipulate and create topographies... Like copy past points between topographies...

Thanks for your video, Govanni, it saved me from wasting more time. You should post this as an idea (this site should have a bug section, I keep saying that). If you do, let me know, I will back it up.

Hey

I have the same problem. It shows 0 for Cut and Fill volumes. How to fix it???

When I switch between 3D views show existing or new it all works it shows the removals. But in Schedule they are 0!!!
