This is a very good question and something we deal with on almost every BIM project. In our workflow, we create a detailed Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) in Microsoft Project (MSP) and estimate man-hours based on the project's specific needs.
Our approach follows the logic of real construction sequencing.
We first break the project into manageable sections, typically by:
Level
Zone / Area
Building / Block
Discipline (Architecture, Structure, MEP)
After that, each section is divided into category-based micro-activities, allowing for accurate measurement of modeling time.
For each micro-activity, we assign indicative man-hours, depending on factors such as:
Model complexity
Required LOD
Modeler experience
Quality of input files (DWG / IFC / Scan-to-BIM)
This method makes project planning, cost estimation, and offer preparation much more accurate and consistent.
