that's because the family use a Masking Region in order to appear simplified in Plan Views.

If you want to see the Family in the Plan View as you see it in 3D Top View , then you can go in family editor and erase that mask or let it be visible only on certain Visual Styles ( for instance in Coarse and Medium). In the same time select the Model Elements and from Visibility Settings > Family Visibility Setting > check Display Plan/RCP for the Visual Style in which you want to appear materials (Fine Visual Style in my case)

The Family's 3D Geometry is invisible in Plan/RCP. Instead what you are see is a Masking Region and 2D linework.

Quick fix, if you don't want 2D linework representations at all: Go to Family 3D View and select all the Model Elements and change their Visibility Settings (e.g. check the box next to Visible in Plan/RCP).  Then go to Plan View and delete the Masking Region and Symbolic Line Work.

Other way to do this -- and the way we normally do those kinds of views -- is to create 3D Plan Views. That is, orient a 3D view to a particular Project Plan View via "Orient to View" .
