We are thinking/researching to see if we should switch from SketchUp to Revit for our 3D drafting. The one thing I am really trying to figure out is "How long does initial setup take to make families and other standard items that we use as a company?" I am sure that it varies for every company but just looking for a general timeline for data input before we can even use the program for billable work.
Well, it all depends on what your firm does. Do you do more healthcare? Or do you do more heavy industrial? Who are your clients?
There are some good resources (BIMObject) and some manufacturers have content.
Making your template file with size of font and size with dimensions is best. While this sounds simple it can actually take a week or so just to get the "basics" set up.
Getting content or making content is a full time job and even firms that have been using revit for 10 years still have to make content.
To get it to a point where you can use it for "billable" work can take at least a month. Will the very first job you do look exactly like SketchUp or even CAD? More than likely not. But after time that will change and what you will produce will only get better.
It really depends on your workflow. My question is are you focus on design phase or construction phase or both? If you are dealing with both, then you have to look at can I get away with design in Revit and then maintain that model for the duration of lifecycle until handover.
As well have you look at Formit as a bridge between Sketchup and Revit? Formit is Autodesk version of sketchup and have great integration with Revit 2022. It allows you to import native Sketchup and FBX. You can take the Formit and link to Revit with all the texture embedded. So your design won't be lost and can continue on with the lifecycle of the design.
As for families, there are tons of places you can check like Bimobject, Revitcity, Bimsmith, Bimstore, Modular, Arcat and many more. It would be ideal to have a BIM champion within your firm to help you with family creation and maintain it.
