Switch Join Order problem

Not sure why, but during a 'switch join order' command, I cannot select the highlighted floor element in the screenshot below. You can see to the left, the floor which is the exact same type, can be selected and has been trimmed at the concrete ground beam.

Also, the pilecap family I created cannot be selected during a 'switch join order' command either, is there a reason for this?

A first guess: If the element is not joined with anything, you cannot 'switch join order' either, you will not be able to select those elements untill they are joined with something while to 'switch join order' tool is active.

The slab to the left in the screenshot was created the exact same way as the one I cannot change on the right. I'm a new Revit user, so maybe I have misunderstood but I thought that two 3D elements wouldn't be able to occupy the same space (clash). So do I need to 'join' elements together when I create them? Shall I join the ground slabs with the foundations?

Yes you need to join them in order to switch join order.
