Surveyor's Control Points Not Alligning w/ Floor Plan

This one might sound tricky and a bit confusing, but I'll try my best to explain.

 

We just bought a Total Station, and we are going to try it out on a small job for a trial run, and I'm trying to get everything loaded into the tablet so it's ready to go. I exported the Revit floor plan to dwg, and imported it to the tablet for the Total Station (Unit: Inches). So far, so good. I get the control points from the surveyor (7 Control Points) for the 15' setbacks from the foundation walls at the building's corners (Units: Int Feet, Delimiter: Comma). Now the coordinates setting is where it seems a bit confusing to me; my options are: XYZ(NEH), NEH, ENH, XYH(NEH), XYZ(ENH), YXH(ENH), and YXZ(NEH). The surveyor told me that in the txt file the information is point, northing, easting, elevation, description. I have literally tried importing the control points in for every coordination setting that is in that order XYZ(NEH), NEH, XYH(NEH), and YXZ(NEH); I have also tried importing all of them in every combination trying to use different units as well (Int Feet, US Feet, and Inches). No matter what settings I use the result is always the same, even though all 7 control points are loaded only 1 point shows up on the screen and the floor plan nowhere to be found, or appears to be a tiny speck that I cant even zoom in enough to see it.

 

I called the manufacturer of the total station and he said that the surveyor might be using a State Plane Coordinate System, which I had never heard of because I'm not a surveyor and I don't pretend to know the systems and methods that they use. I emailed him & asked if it was based on a State Plane Coordinate System; he emailed me back and said, "They are close to UTM 14N but not perfect because a ground scale was applied. They may be off a quarter inch from UTM14N." I have no idea what that means, I Googled it and it says it has something to do with NAD83. I also don't know what that means either, I'm assuming it's a method of surveying, but I don't plan on taking up surveying as a hobby, so is there just a way to get his points to work with Revit, my dwg export, or import on the tablet so I don't have to do some crazy survey marker control point conversion?

When I export, it comes out rotated in the dwg that -2.8 degrease

It's not clear what you mean. Exporting what? from where? to where?  

 

...2.8 degrees was only the angle to True North for the Project.  That is based on the Civil's True North being at 12 o'clock. 

 

 

...BTW, the Civil's line work (the DWG)  is also orthogonal to View when rotated 2.8 degrees.  The line work is askew when True North is at 12 o'clock.

I had plan view set to project north in revit, but when I exported to dwg, the dwg ends up being in true north. If I rotate it in the dwg the points will be off. I’d like it to be in plan north for the guy running the tablet, Incase he needs to draw a line or something, then everything would be straight

Like I said, I don't do Total Station. But the CAD orientation is correct.  Project North is just a Revit Project View Orientation.  It doesn't affect the CAD WCS.  And, don't mess with the DWG's WCS either (e.g. Don't "FIX" the Civil).  It's correct  as is.  But, I'll bet dollars to donuts, that you can change the Viewing Orientation on the Tablet, just as you can with Revit.

I just wasn't sure if there was a way in CAD to change the orientation from True North to Project North

@barthbradley Can you refresh my memory on how we found the Angle of True North? (How far the dwg of angled off from true north)

Hello,

 

Can you post a video of the process? I am having the same issue, I’m new to Revit  and have not been able to figure out how to move and rotate. I always worked in CADMEP and never had issues (as I know the software!).

@Anonymous I don't have a video because I can't remember the last project I had to do this on, but I do have step by step instructions I typed up the time after figuring this out.

 

  1. Open up a brand new Project.
  2. Go to Site View.
  3. Set “Orientation” View Parameter to “True North”.
  4. Link in the civil CAD – center to center.
  5. Acquire coordinates from the CAD Link. This should move the Survey Point to the location of the surveyor’s Geodetic Marker, which in this case happen to be in the Gulf of Mexico.
  6. Zoom to Fit. You might see the Survey Marker a long ways away, but that’s fine.
  7. Turn Survey Point OFF in Visibility Graphics.
  8. Zoom to Fit.
  9. While Clipped, enter the Northing & Easting of your 1st Control Point (or whichever one you want, I chose bottom left which also happen to be the 1st one.)
  10. Link in your RVT – origin to origin.
  11. If civil is not perfectly True North, find the angle difference and enter it in the Project Base Point for Angle of True North (-2.8 in this case)
  12. Move the RVT into the correct position relative to the CAD (use align tool if you can). Move the RVT Link, DO NOT move the Civil DWG.
  13. Publish coordinates to the RVT Link.
  14. Save this new Project. It’s now your official Plot Plan
  15. When you close choose the option to Push coordinates to Linked Revit Model
  16. Go back and open the Revit model you were working in
  17. Import the Control Points using the coordinate system Internal. Do Not use Relative (Project Internal)
  18. When Exporting to DWG, click the 3 dots for more options under Select Export Setup>Units & Coordinates Tab. Under Coordinate System Basis, select Shared. Click OK, and finish your export
