Surface patterns not visible in Hidden line view

I have been trying to view a road in Grey in the 3D view and I have changed the surface pattern and also the graphic override to grey solid fill but it still shows white in 3D view and plan view.

Topographic will not display the surface pattern unfortunately.

Split Surface and change the Material for the Split Surface under the Split Surface's Properties.
