strange behaviour of nested filled region in different visual styles

hello all,

I'm looking at a very strange problem and I don't even know where to start looking for a solution.

Trying to make a long story short, basically I built a tree in a planting family [1] , and nested inside it another planting family [2] (so I can scale everything). That second family contains a 2D tree symbol in floor plan and a detail item family [3] which contains a circle of a filled region with a color. In 2D only the tree symbol and the "color" circle are visible, not the 3D tree, and the "color" shows only in medium detail level because I use it for planting plans and not for other types of plans.

It all works great!

the problem starts when I change the visual styles. the regular filled regions I threw in behave as you'd expect, and the nested ones don't. see examples of them side by side in the different styles:

You can see it affects only shaded, realistic and texture styles.

so I'm really at a lost - can't do anything through material browser, because it's filled region. can't do anything with view template, because I can't override by family only by category which won't help, each family must have it's own color for the planting plan to work.

I just really don't know at what I need to be looking to fix it.

any ideas?
