Storefront Acting weird. e.g. panels cannot be edited, cannot add door

Hello everyone,

I've been using Revit for almost 9 years, and storefront troubleshooting is an easy task for me.

However, after I've installed the 2019 version, some features started to act weirdly, such as the storefront.

I've faced some internet connection problems during download/installation time (which I doubted that it is what causing these issues, but after I did "repair", nothing happened and I still find no difference)

However, regarding the storefront, I noticed these weird unfamiliar steps:

1- there is no differences between a curtain wall exterior glazing and a storefront when I draw them. they both draw without mullions (photo 1). you have to add them yourself. (it's used to be added automatically for the storefront only).

2- Wall panels are automatically created pinned by default. Here you cannot pin, unpin or delete a panel! in fact, they're all grayed out! (photo 2)

3- Cannot add a door to the curtain wall. I guess, if the panel is un-editable, then it won't let you add the door.

4- Revit won't download the curtain-wall door family in anyway. I tried to add it through the Door option, the Component option, and Insert Family option. all they give the same error message "Revit Cannot Load this family" (photo 3)

Does anyone know what's the problem?

Thanks !

Hard to understand. Can you select a Basic Wall from the drop-down to replace the CW you have highlighted in you screenshot?  It seems to me, from your screenshot, that you host a "regular" door to your panel. If so, that panel needs to be swapped out for a non-Curtain Wall Panel.  In other words, the CW Panel needs to be swapped out for a Basic Wall Type.

I would suggest you install any available updates and if that doesn't work go for a clean uninstall and reinstall (make sure the libraries got properly downloaded)

1. This is not the case in 2019.2.2 … Storefront is automatically placed with mullions and pinned panels

2. That's the typical behavior of Exterior Glazing...panels are not pinned YET they are editable (you can change them from the properties palette.)

3. In Exterior Glazing you can add a curtain door without pinning/unpinning

4. The message you are getting is typical when you try to load the wrong type of family... Curtain Doors family is not a Door family hence cannot be loaded as doors. If you need to load the Curtain wall Door, exit the place component command, go to Insert Tab and load the family (Or simply drag and drop it into the project)

PS: u can use normal door families on curtain wall by selecting the curtain panel where the door needs to be placed and changing it's type to a basic wall (set material to glass and thickness to match the other curtain panels)

If you keep switching back and forth between a regular generic wall and a storefront, there will be no difference.

For the door, no, I'm not trying to embed a regular door. I'm using a curtain panel door.

Thanks for the reply !

1. I know the storefront comes in "full options" by default. This is not happening in my case!

2. & 3. In my case, this is true for both types of CW, YET it does NOT edit them or change a panel to door.

4. The message is definitely for cases when you load the wrong category, however I'm not loading a regular door, I'm doing a CW door panel, and I mentioned I did that through Insert >> Load Family, yet it didn't work. But the drag and drop DID worked!

However, in general, I think it still look not normal, may be a clean uninstall will do it.

Thanks again

1. Did you start from a clean template to open an existing file?  Exterior Glazing and Storefront are just names.  If you open an existing file then those curtain wall types may have been altered from their stock forms.

2. When there is no specific panel type is assigned to the curtain wall type, Revit use the default System Glazed panel type and they are not pinned.  The panels are only pinned when a specific type is assigned to the curtain wall type.

3. You cannot add a door to a curtain wall, you can only change a panel to a curtain wall door type, or change a panel to a basic wall type and add a regular door in that wall.

4. You cannot load a curtain wall door family via Component > Load family.  You do it via Insert > Load Family, then follow the #3.

1) True the type Storefront comes preset/predefined with the certain project templates...When I am using the German Templates they come preloaded with some 7 predefined curtain walls...again since you mentioned that you had issues during installation I am guessing that some or all templates/library/Mats did not install properly hence it is missing...

2/3) if you want to behave similar to the Storefront you are used to, Select the Wall >> Go to Type Properties >> and assign a system panel and some mullions then it will behave they way you are used to it with pin /unpin

cURTAIN wALL TO sTORE fRONT.png

4) the error message you posted states that you have to select a family of the category Doors. Hence I assumed that you were loading the Curtain Wall Door (which is a panel) while you had the "Add Door" tool invoked 🙂

Reinstall/repair and make sure u check all the desired libraries/templates which u need are checked (including those which you believe u already have installed if any - if you uncheck those the installer will remove them)

Just on the off chance this is contributing to your situation, double check your Selection options. If Select Pinned Elements is disabled then that makes it harder to interact with the subordinate elements of a curtain wall (grids, mullions, and panels).

Thank you for the valuable solutions.

While most of them didn't work out, I think it is something related to installation imperfection

I might re-install and see, which'll take some time 🙂

Thanks again !
