Start from Project or family

Hi All,

I have created this assembly in Inventor 2018 as individual parts (See pdf attached). Now the requirement is to generate same layout in 3D view in Revit 2018. I know using BIM exchange in Inventor, I can create asdk or rvt format of individual components.

So my question is when I open Revit, do I start new project or family ? If I start as family, all this individual component will become a member. When I start in project, there is option to load family. I believe family is same wording as individual part in 3D modelling.

Also, do I start in Mechanical template or Architecture ? components are mainly mechanical. Wall structure is unknown at the moment. Another thing is, if I can export to Revit from Inventor, can I export the whole assembly using BIM exchange and then once in revit, explode to sub components ?

Regards,

Yashi

Export to ADSK and Import directly into Revit project and explode, or export to RFA and load into Revit project.  Both methods will work. Regarding which template (RFT or RTE) to use, that's up to you. It's not going to have an impact your Inventor model.  What is your downstream workflow is going to be?

Hi Bradley,

Thank you for guidance. So if I model up my inventor assembly correctly, Revit can be just matter of BIM exchange and loading ? downstream workflow as in ? So when I have converted to adsk file, and open up project, do I load the model in ground floor ? or can 3D view can be available to drop my 3D model ? do I need to build anything in Revit like wall  if 3D has it ? My Revit licence need to be revoked to 2018 as end user has 2018.

That will happen probably after Easter as we are shutting down early today.

I will go through youtube videos over the Easter break and learn more about it. But direct input from you will be helpful. videos I saw so far bring individual components into ground floor and 3D view is generated.

If I do not hear from you, Have Happy Easter !!

Thanks and Regards,

Yashi

Revit has a default orthographic 3D view.  Is this what you are wondering about?  You can create any, and as many views of the model you want.

Hi Bradley,

I meant to ask, as to where I can load or insert the adsk file ?

In one of youtube video it says to open new building component instead of family or project. If I convert my assembly to .adsk and open in revit, do I load in ground floor in a revit window?

I am getting gist of it but missing link.

Yashi

Hi Bradley,

I have done my inventor model and converted to adsk for revit suitability. Now when I load adsk file, will my views will be generated automatically like elevation and plan views ? Based on model from Inventor ?

Second question is, can I place my adsk file into existing revit drawing file, or have to set up north true project north before I load to existing file ? If so, how can I match my true north to existing drawings ?

When to use Mechanical REP version/template compared architecture ? Please assist ASAP.

Many thanks and Regards,

Yashi

Hi Bradley,

I have loaded adsk into revit and this is how it comes out to be. See pdf attached. when I just view it its just a box, clicking on it, it shows internal parts. Views are created but how do I set floorings / level ?

If I update adsk file, do I need to reload or will this be automatically updated ? is there a way to link them?

Regards,

Yashi
