Stair and Column

How can I join in a column to a stair? 

What's the best way to deal with this scenario?

create Reference Planes on the underside of the stairs ( in section views) and then select Columns and  Attach Top/Base > Top to these Reference Planes

This doesn't seem to angle the column to create a full transition. 

Is this how it's supposed to work?

you have three available options to attach (Attachment Justification)a Column or Wall to a sloped Reference Plane.

Use Maximum intersection:
